What is the cloud and what are the benefits to business?

The end of the crisis will come from the hand of new technologies, including cloud computing, or "cloud"

From the Internet phenomenon in the business world had not seen a transformation of such an impact. In this article, we answer common questions about the Cloud.

What is Cloud or Cloud?: A model for using technology as a service (applications, computing and storage), without investment, secure and accessible from anywhere. This revolution is offering companies significant cost savings by eliminating the initial investment (Capex) and subsequently very low variable costs according to consumption (Opex)

What are the main benefits of the cloud?

principales_beneficios.jpg

  • To focus on creating value and innovation.
  • Reduce costs, both initial and subsequent maintenance.
  • Increase productivity and hence competitiveness of enterprises.
  • Increase the availability of computer service, 24x7x365
  • Accelerate the implementation of new applications and services (time to market)
  • Avoid investments in assets such as hardware and software.
  • You pay only for necessary use.
  • Always updated daily.
  • Set the service or grow at any time
  • Differentiating the service user, adjusting the cost even more.

Why has the cloud become so important?

fuerza_nube.jpg1 - The macroeconomic situation forces us to reduce costs.

2 - In the market pressure for firms to innovate with limited investments.

3 - Because there is a need to align IT tasks to business needs.

4 - Because web interfaces have matured to achieve almost similar experiences can be achieved with a desktop application.

5 - Because communications are better and more reliable, with room for improvement.

6 - Why the need for employee mobility to work in different locations poses some challenges that online applications in the cloud cover perfectly.

Is it advisable to move everything to the cloud?
mover_a_nube.gif It depends, but generally not. We must define a strategy adopted to align with the objectives of each organization. In general, small businesses without hesitation, the median transfer non-critical services and applications and then continue with the web and productivity and collaboration applications such as email, intranet or virtual meetings. For larger organizations, our recommendation is to adopt a hybrid model.

And my IT department?

departamento_ti.jpg The solutions in the cloud allows your IT department to focus on adding value rather than being forced to devote most of their time maintaining and upgrading the technologies' infrastructure, with the same guarantees of security and performance as if it were housed within their own business. It is known that companies who have not adopted Cloud, spend 70% of their IT budget on maintenance and only 30% on new projects and innovation.

Why service providers in the cloud can offer such competitive prices?

- In the same way that is cheaper than our house is supplied with an electrical grid, water and gas instead of an electric generator at home, maintain a well or mine our own gas.

- Because we pay only what you use, as with as light, water or gas.

- Cloud providers manage large volumes of technology assets, energy and internet traffic, achieving very low prices ..

- The data center services in the cloud are hosted in places geographically very cold, reducing energy consumption for cooling.

- When we implemented an infrastructure for our organization, we tend to over-sized so as to not fall short and can cope with unexpected peaks and growth. This approach leads to over-investment, a further unnecessary maintenance and not take 100% of resources for most of the time.

- Because the technology has matured to offer high automation capabilities.

The cloud, on data

  • According to various studies, companies that have not yet adopted a cloud, they spend 70% of their IT budget for maintenance and only 30% on new projects and innovation. Is required to reverse this trend and the cloud is the solution

  • According to IDC, over the next few years 50% of IT service will cloud.

  • According to recent studies, 75% of IT managers (CIO's) indicate that currently have or who are using cloud services.

What are the types of services in the cloud?
servicios1.gif 1 - Software as a Service (SaaS): Allows you to use applications without having to purchase or maintain any assets in your business. For example: email, calendar, portal management, intranet or remote meetings at any time, anywhere. Within hours you can have everything you need to work with just an Internet connection. Microsoft BPOS / Office 365 and Google Apps are two major deals in the market.
servicios2.gif 2 - Platform as a Service (PaaS) is an operating system in the cloud that abstracts the complexity involved in managing and maintaining servers and provides network functions, calculation, storage and databases. Typically, users of this type of model are ICT departments and software vendors. Microsoft Windows Azure, Salesforce, Google App Engine are examples of this model.
servicios3.gif 3 - Infrastructure as a Service (IAAS): Allows you to have a virtual server infrastructure optimized to quickly deploy new services. It is the most flexible and introduces savings, although not as many as the previous two types of cloud as it requires management and maintenance. The typical customer of this service and IT departments looking to reduce costs, deploy their own and have control and flexibility to grow as needed.

Where are the applications and my data?

As we are talking about a public tag or a private tag:

1 - Public Cloud: In geographically distributed data centers in different continents, protected by high security measures and systems that offer high availability. They are designed to optimize resources and energy, to be managed automatically, and sharing service with thousands of clients by ensuring the confidentiality of data, reducing costs and achieving economies of scale.

2 - Private Cloud: In your data center. This model enables companies to gain more from their investments in infrastructure and optimizing its resources and self-sufficient by providing services in-house. Especially suitable for large organizations who wish to maintain total control of its infrastructure and its data in their own schools. This model achieves a cost savings over traditional infrastructure because it makes better use through virtualization and automation, but requires that the IT department management, saving is less than the public cloud and of course, does not prevent an investment in assets.

3 - Cloud hybrid: A model based on each organization to combine public cloud services with other private cloud. The reasons are usually the need to maintain absolute control of certain applications or information.
